Employee Hotline Basics

A friend asked me to riff on employee hotlines or “business conduct lines”. So I recorded a couple of youtube videos that cover the basics for potential callers and those managing such systems.

These are necessary for any business that achieves a certain scale. I mention the need to have a hotline if you get above 100 employees, but each business has to make a judgement call. If you have a very transparent culture and highly engaged employees, you can probably wait a bit and get a little bigger before implementation. Once you achieve multiple locations and higher numbers of employees, simple risk and human nature demand a fail safe system for ensuring ethics and safety guidelines are being followed.

Many vendors are out there that can help you implement these systems, and they range in price from basic service to those that can produce analytics and reports for your leadership team.

I hope these quick takes are helpful, and please keep messaging me with your topic suggestions.

It isn't just Steve's pragmatism and ability to see all situations through the prism of common sense and fairness that make him the first person I consult when I encounter a challenging situation. It's the fact that his motivations as a professional, philanthropist and friend are born out of a genuine sense of goodness and kind intent. You hear a lot of people that claim to be 'selfless' but with Steve it's really never about HIM. He's smart, thoughtful and compassionate and I am one of many who count him among my most trusted colleagues.
